Joint replacement surgery can be life-changing for those living with chronic pain conditions like arthritis. However, a structured joint replacement rehab program is essential if you want to maximize the effects of your surgery for the best possible outcome.
At Burlingame Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy, regularly work with patients who’ve undergone a total joint replacement–whether in the hip, knee, or elsewhere! Our Burlingame, CA physical therapists help patients regain independence and quality of life by focusing on rebuilding strength and range of motion.
Today, we want to share the story of a patient, Jacob (not his real name), who underwent a total knee replacement and stuck to his rehabilitation program–to excellent results.
Jacob’s Journey to Recovery: A Case Study
Laying the Groundwork for Jacob’s Success
After years of managing knee pain from osteoarthritis, Jacob decided to undergo a total knee replacement when he was 65 years old. He knew the surgery could provide lasting relief, but he also wanted to restore as much of his knee function as possible.
A few months before his surgery, Jacob met with the physical therapists at Burlingame Therapeutic Associates Physical Therapy, where we discussed his overall recovery goals and got to work on developing a joint replacement rehab program to help optimize his recovery.
Jacob’s surgery went off without a hitch, and once his surgeon cleared him, he began attending regular sessions at our clinic. We guided him through a customized program focused on gradually restoring his knee’s strength, stability, and range of motion.
Jacob’s Joint Replacement Rehab Plan
Jacob’s program included several techniques designed to address his specific needs at each stage of his recovery. Here’s an outline of his program and some of the methods we found effective:
Pain Management Techniques
- Manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue manipulation and knee mobilizations helped improve blood and reduce stiffness, making movement less painful.
- Modalities such as hot and cold therapy further helped with pain relief.
Range of Motion Exercises
- Early on, Jacob’s therapist guided him through assisted knee bends to improve his knee’s mobility.
- Heel slides, which involve sliding the heel back and forth while lying down, helped Jacob increase his knee’s range of motion without stressing the new joint.
Strength-Building Exercises
- We guided Jacob through exercises to strengthen his quadriceps, helping to improve his balance and stability.
- As Jacob’s knee grew stronger, he progressed to exercises to build his core and lower body strength, both of which are critical for safe walking and overall mobility.
Gait Training
- Under close supervision, Jacob initially practiced safe walking techniques with a mobility aid, then transitioned to walking independently as he grew stronger.
- Jacob’s therapist incorporated balance exercises to help Jacob develop confidence and coordination with his new joint (and prevent falls).
Education and Home Exercise Program
- Jacob received a program of exercises he could safely perform at home, allowing him to continue progressing outside the clinic.
- His therapist also educated him on movement modifications and safe daily practices to avoid strain on his knee.
What Were the Results of Jacob’s Rehabilitation Program?
Although it took some time–as was to be expected–Jacob did experience significant improvements throughout his joint replacement rehab. His pain decreased, and he noticed a dramatic improvement in his knee’s strength and range of motion. It wasn’t long before he was able to walk around his neighborhood and climb stairs, two activities that had been very painful for him before his surgery.
After one total knee replacement and several months of physical therapy, Jacob was more physically active than he’d been in years. He no longer felt held back by his knee.
